Advances Reconstruction &
Major Scene Logistics

This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills essential to the investigation of the more complex crime scenes.  Such scenes include those with multiple site, involving multiple bodies, ritualistic behaviors, or illicit grave exhumations.

The course will provide the student with the ability to provide general management of major crime investigations.  In addition, the ability to reconstruct crimes is increased through studying “old and cold” case documents in an effort to develop additional clues and information.

Advanced evidence topics are included to provide the participant with specialized information relevant to their major crime type exposure.

Subjet Matter Includes:

  • Managing the major crime scene
  • Scene investigation feeding the suspect’s interrogation
  • Dealing with the unsolved cases, hidden clues
  • Building a uniform investigative package from diverse resources
  • General Blood spatter interpretation
  • Coordinating multiple scene crimes
  • The investigation of serial crimes
  • Special topics including basic human bone identification
  • Advanced evidence topics, including firearms, projectiles, and DNA
  • Crime scene photography, including macro methods, and infra-red

This 50-hour (five day) program is intended to build upon the specialized techniques acquired by the student during the 60-hour (six day) Crime Scene Investigation and Reconstruction course.

Course Outline:

DAY 1

  • Review the basics of scene processing and pathways to evidence association
  • Critical evidence and scene documentation: the impact of omissions and errors
  • Managing the simple scene: recognizing the serial crime event
  • Techniques for showing spatial, time, and geographic relationships, VIA Charting and LINK analysis

DAY 2

  • How evidence provides for a reconstruction that then leads to additional evidence findings
  • Techniques for communication and organization within complex investigations
  • Managing the major scene: coordinating evidence collection and communications
  • How to obtain investigative consistency with diverse resources and personnel
  • Managing multiple scenes and tactical deployment concerns
  • The logistics of a major multiple site scene... where to begin

DAY 3

  • The entire day will be devoted to the processing of a major multiple site crime scene scenarios.  The participants will perform full scene processing, collection, interpretation, and organization of a crime containing 10 or more bodies and hundreds of items of evidence spread over numerous locations.

DAY 4

  • The investigation of the serial crime... special problems presented
  • Dealing with the unsolved case... finding the hidden clues
  • Scene investigation clues which aid in the transformation of an interview into an interrogation

DAY 5

  • Specialized topics
  • An exhumation exercise...how to find them and how to collect them.
  • Bloodstain patterns in unusual case scenarios
  • Bone identification
  • Advanced firearms evidence topics
  • Presentation of homework exercise (Final exam)
